Unreal Engine MCP, and where Dola fits
Dola is not an Unreal Engine MCP server. How it differs from MCP-based UE bridges, and how its desktop app uses MCP as a client for your own servers.

Dola is not an MCP server
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call tools served by another program. An Unreal Engine MCP server is one of those programs: it sits next to Unreal Editor and exposes editor actions so a client such as an AI IDE or a terminal agent can use them.
Dola AI is not that. It does not serve Unreal to other clients. It is a desktop app and its own Unreal Editor plugin, joined by a local bridge, and Dola’s own agents do the editor work. If you are looking for a server to plug into another client, Dola is not it.
Where Dola does use MCP: as a client
The Dola desktop app can connect to MCP servers you choose, so its agents can use extra tools next to the built-in Unreal ones:
- Add a server by command (stdio) or by URL (HTTP or SSE).
- Or browse the official MCP Registry from the app.
- A tool asks for approval in chat unless its server marks it read-only and non-destructive. Launch commands containing shell metacharacters are refused.
MCP bridge vs Dola, practically
- Who drives: with an MCP server, your existing AI client drives Unreal. With Dola, Dola’s Blueprint, editor, C++, and other specialist agents do.
- What ships: an MCP server gives you the tools that server implements. Dola ships its own set: Blueprint graph editing with compile and save, editor actions, Engine API lookup, a local project index, Play in Editor checks, and checkpoints (tools reference).
- Versions: Epic’s experimental MCP plugin is a 5.8 story; Dola’s published plugin builds are UE 5.7 for Windows and Linux editors.
- Setup: MCP bridges are installed and configured per client. Dola installs its plugin into your project from the desktop app (plugin docs).
Using an AI IDE with an MCP bridge instead: Dola AI vs Cursor. Using a terminal agent: Claude Code for Unreal Engine.
