What is Dola AI? The Unreal Engine AI assistant
Dola AI is an AI assistant for Unreal Engine: the Dola desktop app plus an Editor plugin for Blueprints and C++. Not ByteDance’s Dola chat app.

The short answer
Dola AI (dolaai.pro) is an AI assistant for Unreal Engine developers. It comes as the Dola desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux plus an Unreal Editor plugin. You describe what you want in chat; specialist agents then do the work in the project you have open — editing Blueprint graphs, changing C++ under Source/, and working with materials, levels, widgets, and other assets.
The point is that the assistant acts in your editor instead of handing you a snippet to paste. When the plugin is connected, Blueprint edits go through live editor tools and finish with a compile and save, not a guess at .uasset bytes.
Not ByteDance’s Dola chat app
“Dola” is a popular name, so searches for “Dola app” or “Dola AI” mix several products. ByteDance runs a general-purpose AI chat assistant called Dola — the app was called Cici until it was renamed in late 2025 — for conversation, writing, translation, and images on phones and the web.
Dola AI at dolaai.pro is unrelated to it: a different company, a different product, and a different account system. If you want a general chatbot on your phone, you are looking for ByteDance’s app. If you build games in Unreal Engine, you are in the right place. Dola AI is also not the DoLa decoding method from AI research (arXiv 2309.03883). The name clashes are collected in What Dola is for Unreal Engine developers.
Who Dola AI is for
Dola AI is for people who already work in Unreal Engine and want an assistant that can act on their project:
- Solo and indie developers who wear every hat and want help wiring Blueprints or scaffolding gameplay C++.
- Technical designers who live in Blueprint graphs, materials, and UMG widgets.
- Gameplay programmers who want source edits that follow Unreal’s reflection conventions, and an Engine API lookup that saves a trip to the docs.
- Small teams that would rather keep chats and project indexes on their own machines.
It is not aimed at people who want a general chatbot, or at players looking for NPC behavior in a game. If “Unreal Engine AI” to you means Behavior Trees, see NPC AI vs developer assistants.
What Dola AI does
- Blueprints. With the plugin connected, the Blueprint specialist edits graphs — nodes, pins, compile, save — through the live editor bridge.
- C++. The coder specialist reads, searches, and edits headers and .cpp files under Source/, including macros such as UCLASS and UPROPERTY. You still build in Unreal; Dola does not compile the editor for you.
- Materials, levels, and other assets. Specialists cover Unreal materials and instances, maps and actors, UMG widgets, Niagara systems, animation assets, audio, Sequencer, and AI assets such as behavior trees.
- Project knowledge. Dola indexes your project locally so agents can search what is there instead of inventing paths.
- Modeling mode. A separate Babylon.js studio in the desktop app: chat writes mesh code, a live viewport updates, the agent inspects the result, and you export GLB. See Modeling mode is a Babylon studio.
The full list of specialists is in the agent roster, and how they cooperate in a real request is in Dola AI assistant: chat and agents.
How the pieces fit together
There are three parts. The Dola desktop app hosts the chat and the agents. The Unreal Editor plugin runs inside your editor. A local bridge on your machine connects the two, so tools run against the project you have open — not a cloud copy.
A supervisor agent reads each request and hands it to the right specialist. Larger, game-sized requests go through a plan you approve before anything changes; small ones can go straight to the specialist.
Local-first, with hosted models
Chat history, project indexes, and the editor bridge are designed to stay on your computer. Dola does not host your .uproject. Sign-in and Dola-hosted model inference go through dolaai.pro, which forwards requests to OpenRouter and on to the model provider; the account database is not a chat store, but the provider does receive your prompt. With your own API key, the app sends requests to your provider instead and uses no Dola credits. Details are in models, pricing, local vs hosted and the privacy policy.
What Dola AI is not
- Not Epic Developer Assistant, Epic’s first-party Q&A panel, and not Epic’s experimental Unreal MCP plugin in 5.8.
- Not a replacement for a general AI IDE in every repository. The honest comparison is Cursor alternative for Unreal Engine.
- Not a promise that it “understands your whole project”. It searches what it has indexed and drives the editor when the bridge is up.
How to start
- Create a free account to join the waitlist. Access rolls out in waves.
- When you have access, download and install the Dola app.
- Sign in inside the app — the Dola login guide covers the browser hand-off and password resets.
- Attach your project, install the plugin, and try the first Blueprint workflow.
Published plugin builds are for Unreal Engine 5.7 on Windows. Dola is free with your own model API key; plans with Dola-hosted models and included credits are on the plans page, and the longer product page is AI coding assistant for Unreal Engine.
